The sign of the second derivative f(x) determines whether a critical point is a local maximum, minimum, or saddle point. If f(x) > 0, the first derivative f (x) increases as we move to the right and decreases as we move to the left, indicating a local minimum. This insight can be useful in deep learning when optimizing hyperparameters, as it allows us to identify regions of the loss landscape where further exploration may lead to improved performance.
